Grief and Bereavement During the Summer

Bereavement and loss can happen at any time of year. Summer, with its cultural expectations of sunshine, holidays, social gatherings, and happiness, can be particularly difficult to navigate when you are living with grief.

The season may bring reminders of holidays shared with the person who has died, or highlight the loss of future adventures that will never be experienced together. For those grieving a partner, school holidays can bring additional childcare responsibilities or financial pressures. Significant dates such as birthdays, wedding anniversaries, or the anniversary of a death can also feel especially painful.

It is important to remember that grief has no timetable. There is no right or wrong way to grieve, and every person's experience is unique. Allow yourself the time and space to feel whatever emotions arise, whether that is sadness, disbelief, anger, guilt, or even relief. All feelings are valid.

While many people find ways to process their grief with the support of family and friends, there are times when additional help may be needed. If you are feeling overwhelmed or struggling to cope, counselling can provide a safe and supportive space to explore your feelings. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness—it is often one of the bravest steps you can take.
