I read a post recently about living life like Google Maps. On the way to a destination, you may take a wrong turn, or there is an obstacle in the way, but Google Maps never gives up on you. It never says you are in the wrong, or make bad decisions, it just calmly reroutes you until you eventually get to where you are going.
There is some truth in this. Life is full of twists and turns, unexpected events, challenges. Sometimes life’s obstacles are so huge, traumatic and life changing that rerouting takes much longer, and may not be straightforward.
I was reminded of what my son used to say when he was very little, and feeling tired, hungry or just overwhelmed: ‘I’ve ran out of petrol.’ This was his way of saying he needed refuelling with food, rest, calm and unconditional support.
We all need this, even more so when feeling overwhelmed with emotions, feelings, mental and physical exhaustion. If you are feeling this way, that life has thrown just one too many challenges, it is OK to reach out for that non-judgemental, unconditional support that a counsellor provides. It is OK to take time to refuel, recharge, in order to move forward to your destination.
