How often do you find yourself angry, critical with yourself? Judging yourself for perceived flaws, angry with yourself for doing something you regret or for not being on top of things? Do you find yourself saying: ‘I am usually strong; I just get on with it?’
Life challenges happen, things may not go the way we want them to, we do make mistakes. Self-compassion is showing yourself the same kindness, warmth and understanding you show others who are suffering. Imagine what it would feel like if you showed yourself that same compassion at times of distress.
Self-compassion is about changing your thinking, self-talk, and behaviours. Its about giving yourself time and space to process emotions, thoughts, rather than feeling the need to just carry on, to be strong.
Part of self-compassion includes reaching out for support, connecting with others. This can be talking with family and friends, or simply sitting peacefully with them, or speaking with a counsellor.
